VDMA Robotics + Automation Association

The VDMA Robotics + Automation Association (VDMA R+A) represents one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing sectors of the machinery industry.

Our more than 320 member companies are active in three highly innovative areas:

  • Robotics
  • Integrated Assembly Solutions
  • Machine Vision

Taken together, these technologies form the robotics and automation sector which in Germany represents an annual turnover of 15 billion euros in 2019. The industry is highly export-oriented – more than half of turnover is sold abroad. China represents one of the most important markets for the German (and European) suppliers of robotics and automation technology.

The need to automate will continue to be strong. Automation is an essential key to secure competitiveness and high levels of productivity. Automation ensures consistently high quality levels in production with 100% accuracy, infallible quality checks and complete traceability. Without a high level of automation, a wide range of complex and innovative products could not be produced at affordable price levels. Furthermore, the technology can relieve people of monotonous, physically challenging or even hazardous tasks. Increasingly, humans and robots collaborate more closely: in this way a collaborative robot (or cobot) assists the worker. Lastly, intelligently automated production can make a decisive contribution to minimizing our consumption of energy and natural resources. For all these reasons, demand for robotics, integrated assembly solutions and machine vision has been growing consistently and will continue to do so.

Association activities in China

The VDMA Robotics + Automation Association, which is headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, actively collaborates with the experts in the VDMA Representative Office in Shanghai. This enables us to offer valuable services to our members and to remain in close contact with many important stakeholders in China, such as partner associations, government authorities and service providers. Regular VDMA Robotics + Automation China Management Meetings bring together executive level representatives to discuss strategic business and technology issues. This provides excellent networking opportunities for our members. B2B events organized by our VDMA Shanghai office provide a valuable framework for presenting new products and technologies to potential customers coming from various industry sectors. VDMA Robotics + Automation is also present at trade shows and organizes joint booths for the members of the association. Regular business surveys and market studies provide unique insights into market opportunities and developments. A more recent focus area is the coordination of standardization activities in the area of robotics and automation, most notably concerning interoperability in the smart factory of the future through our OPC UA Companion Specifications for robotics, machine vision and integrated assembly solutions.

Trade shows in China

VDMA Robotics + Automation is present at a number of trade shows in China and currently supports CIROS (the annual China International Robot Show in Shanghai), the Vision China Shanghai Show as part of the Laser World of Photonics China (in Shanghai) as well as LEAP (the South China International Advanced Electronics, Automation and Laser Expo).
