There are first clear rays of hope in July 2020 with an 11 percent increase in domestic orders. However, there is still a lack of orders from abroad. When added up over the first seven months, double-digit massive declines in both domestic and foreign orders continue to show the clear consequences of the crisis.

The mechanical and plant engineering industry is fighting against the consequences of the global corona pandemic, but also against protectionism in international trade, which continues to be a burden - and consequently expects production to fall by 17 percent in 2020.
Incoming orders in the mechanical and plant engineering sector continued to fall by double-digit percentages in July, although the decline slowed down noticeably. Compared to the previous year, orders were down 19 percent in real terms on the previous year.
The corona pandemic reached the mechanical engineering industry at the end of the first quarter: in March 2020, order intake fell short of the previous year's level by 9 percent in real terms. Domestic orders fell by 2 percent. The decline in foreign orders was more pronounced at 12 percent.
In February, incoming orders in the German mechanical engineering sector fell short of the previous year's level by 4 percent in real terms. While orders from domestic customers fell by 6 percent, orders from abroad were 3 percent below their prior-year level.
