„The high number of participants has shown me that the topics of the event have been in tune with today's China business”, said Mr. Axel E. Barten, member of VDMA chief executive board in his final statements during the “2nd VDMA Mechanical Engineering Summit” in Shanghai.

More than 120 participants have used the opportunity to strengthen their local network of German mechanical and plant engineering and have discussed about important parameters of current framework conditions in a practical way.

Especially the lack of qualified staff is a constant source of concern for companies, since this is one of the key factors that could limit for further growth in the market. Stefan Meining, head of apprenticeship program of Festo in Jinan, Shandong province has explained in his lecture what strategy his company applies to face exactly this challenge. “Through cooperation with a local vocational school based on a program of the German Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai we successfully train our apprentices”, he said. In this context smaller enterprises have the chance to jump on the bandwagon, since the practical part of the apprenticeship can be done in the workshop of another larger company.

To generate more business opportunities in the future, „handling the middle market segment in China” is a hot topic in the German mechanical and plant engineering industry in recent times. Both parallel fora in the afternoon showed the participants several options for their companies to develop an appropriate strategy regarding this issue. “A silver bullet does not exist regarding this question“, explained Mr. Axel E. Barten. “Every company has to decide by itself, if they themselves develop products for this market segment or if they cooperate with a local company, like in the case of Trumpf to satisfy the market requirements”, he went on.

In the Chinese market it is very difficult to sell service features. All participants of the final panel discussion about “After Sales Service” have agreed upon this question. Nevertheless an own service offer on site is a must. In this context especially the quality of the apprenticeship of the service technicians is crucial for the market success of the companies.

The “VDMA Mechanical Engineering Summit” is the local member meeting in China and takes place in November every year in Shanghai. The 2nd summit has gained great popularity and 15% more participants than in the previous year have attend the summit 2013 in Shanghai.
