Plastics and Rubber Machinery

id:2002760

China is the most important destination for German plastics and rubber machines, Germany is the most important supplier of this equipment for plastics and rubber converters in China. These close relations are reflected in the activities of the plastics and rubber machinery association in and for China.

Portrait of the Branch

Whenever modern societies have to find solutions for their specific demands and needs in infrastructure, individual mobility, food supply or health care, plastics and rubber products and components are indispensable ingredients.

The vital properties of plastics and rubber perfectly match building and construction needs. Ensuring durability, low maintenance and cost-effectiveness, they are used in a wide range of applications. Plastics technology also plays an essential role in the development of transport. Lightweight plastics provide solutions not only for economic, but also for environmental benefit. Perfectly packed and protected food can be transported over long distances without losing any of its quality or freshness. Hygienic standards can easily be met. Plastics products for the medical field have to meet these and other standards, too. Modern healthcare would be impossible without components made of plastics or rubber.

German manufacturers offer machinery and equipment to meet all challenges of the market, additionally providing reliable and long-term after sales services – and thus, they set up a proven partnership with the Chinese plastics and rubber industry. With a considerable share in China's overall worldwide machinery procurement, Germany ranks as top supplier to Chinese converters. On the other hand, China has been the most important destination for German machinery equipment for many years.

Plastics and rubber machinery manufacture is an important sector in the German mechanical engineering and plant construction industry. For the core machinery business, the production value in 2012 amounted to about Euro 6.5 bn, comprising compounding, processing, post-processing and recycling equipment.

The German machinery manufacturers, who supply around 23 per cent of the total world demand are leading producers. German manufacturers rank first in exports. With an export share of nearly 70 per cent, German shipments to customers abroad assume considerable importance. The total value of exports in 2012 amounted to Euro 4.4 bn.

The Plastics and Rubber Machinery Association within VDMA unites around 210 renowned companies of the branch, representing 85 to 90 per cent of the industry's total output in Germany.

The association gives its members a stage to meet and exchange experience; various promotional measures help to facilitate and support its members' exports. The association provides facts and data for the branch and on the branch. It supports and sponsors trade shows in Germany, in Europe and overseas. Standardisation, recommendations and joint research projects are part of the technical services rendered. In the field of public relations, the association regularly publishes press releases and keeps in touch with the industry's trade journals.

The online sourcing service www.machines-for-plastics.com helps customers to find suitable suppliers of machinery and equipment.

Association Activities in China

VDMA, the German Engineering Federation, is not only active in Germany and Europe, but is represented abroad with offices in Brazil, China, India, Japan and Russia. As shareholder in VDMA's Beijing office the plastics and rubber machinery association offers highly efficient support to the association's members in China. Almost all of its members are represented in China in one way or the other, around 50 companies have subsidiaries in China which produce or sell, monitor and service machines.

Company representatives meet once a year – traditionally on the day prior to the opening of CHINAPLAS either in Shanghai or Guangzhou - to exchange views and experiences. Meetings provide a well-accepted platform to discuss issues of common interest.

A survey on turnover and exports of the industry in China is conducted every year among members. They once initiated a salary report, which gives broad information on the development in mechanical engineering in several regions. Meanwhile this product is made available to all members in VDMA. In order to supplement this more general approach on a branch-specific level, a survey not only on salaries but also on other HR related issues has been carried out among association members and met a very good response. It is to be repeated bi-annually.

Together with the Beijing office colleagues, the plastics and rubber machinery association compiles market reports for the relevant fields of applications. Local Chinese as well as international standardisation is an issue which becomes ever more important and is constantly monitored. Manufacturers from abroad who produce machines in China are interested to be up-to-date and to become involved, wherever possible.

The association is in regular contact with its Chinese counterpart CPMIA, main topic is the exchange of market data and on technological issues. They meet on the occasion of trade shows in China and Germany and at conferences.

Trade Shows in China

The German plastics and rubber machinery association, together with its European Federation EUROMAP- supports CHINAPLAS - the biggest and most important trade fair for the plastics and rubber industries in China.  In 2013 CHINAPLAS in Guangzhou was staged as the 27th edition and was the largest event ever.

The association initiates the German pavilion at CHINAPLAS, applies for government support and closely co-operates with the organizers, both in China and in Germany. It also staffs the information booth. At CHINAPLAS 2013, 140 German manufacturers of plastics and rubber resins, machines and complete lines, moulds and dies as well as auxiliary and peripheral equipment presented - on 3.835 m² - the range of products and services they offer to potential Chinese customers. The German Pavilion – the biggest ever - clearly reflects the importance of the Chinese market and its significance to the suppliers.
