The first VDMA Shanghai Seminar on Marketing and Communications, sponsored by Nantong Economic & Technological Development Area (NETDA), took place on the 25th March 2016.

The internet continues to grow at high pace. In our more and more digital world, digital media has become a key topic. This does not only affect the B2C segment, also the B2B segment cannot hide from the digital revolution to attract and communicate with (potential) clients. Therefore, VDMA China organized a seminar which covered special industry needs and the local characteristics of Chinese clients from a marketing point of view.

Mr. Oliver Lorenz, Chief Executive Officer of Montfort (Shanghai), Mrs. Gina Hardebeck, Director China of Storymaker GmbH as well as Managing Partner of Storymaker Public Relations (Beijing)  and Mrs. Pauline Yu, General Manager of Storymaker Public Relations (Beijing) shared their expertise on marketing and public relations for mechanical engineering companies in China compared to Europe.

Mr. Lorenz introduced the topic with his speech “Marketing & Social Media Instruments for the Manufacturing Industry in China”. He pointed out the high potential to reach potential clients by combining social media with direct mailing. Companies using social media in China have to be aware and make use of local platforms such as WeChat and Youku as well as their specific benefits (e.g. QR code scanning).  Mrs. Hardebeck and Mrs. Yu from Storymaker hold their presentation about “Successful PR & Marketing for Industrial Companies in China“ where they also emphasized the need of adapting to local circumstances in terms of customer needs and platforms as well as an integrated communication to spread content via diverse communication channels.

All in all, companies need to be aware that social media communication in China might be more important than in other countries. The subsequent discussion with participants verified this and revealed the difficulty of a balance between proper market adaption and content given by the headquarters as well as the high interest expressed in questions concerning social media instruments.

After the two topics and a mutual discussion, the sponsor of the event NETDA, introduced their service scope to the participants. All in all, the seminar was very successful and showed that the interest in digital media is very high amongst our VDMA member companies.
